General information - What are Nippers?
As part of its community services charter, Burning Palms SLSC conducts a Nipper program for children.
Nippers a fun way for children 5-14yrs (age at 30thSeptember 2011) to enjoy the beach in a safe environment. It also offers children an educational pathway through the delivery of the SLSA Junior Development Program. This program is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participating in lessons that will pathway them to becoming a fully rounded participant in both lifesaving and sport – we like to call it ‘Serious Fun’. Children are able to participate in board paddling, surfing, swimming, sprinting, wading and fun activities and games, dependent on their ages and abilities.
Apart from competition, Nippers will also take part in the active study of beach and surf awareness, such as, feeling safe at the beach, being sun smart, hazard watch, identifying dangers in the surf, and what wearing the red and yellow is all about, so by the end of the season your child will have a greater understanding of the beach and its surroundings.
Due to the popularity of Nippers, many surf clubs in the Sydney area have had to cap their numbers. Burning Palms SLSC, due to its remote location (access is via a 2.5km walking track) has never had more than 15 nippers. To remedy this we now hold our training days in conjunction with a neighbouring club at Garie Beach, which is accessible by car. The drive takes approx. one hour from Sydney C.B.D
Thanks for your interest in becoming part of Burning Palms nippers.
